LOCATION: San Francisco and adjacent bay and coastline, San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa and Marin Counties. DATE: October 28, 1996 INCIDENT SUMMARY: While in drydock, approximately 96,000 gallons of Intermediate Fuel Oil were accidently released from the vessel. This oil flowed onto the dock and approximately 40,000 gallons spilled into San Francisco Bay. RESPONSIBLE PARTY: San Francisco Drydock NATURAL RESOURCE TRUSTEES: California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife; California Dept. of Parks and Recreation; United States Fish and Wildlife Service; National Park Service; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. RESOURCES IMPACTED: Birds (593 estimated killed); recreational beach use, shoreline habitat; fisheries. SETTLEMENT DETAILS: The trustees settled the NRDA portion of the case for $3.625 million. $1.03 million was allocated to compensate for human recreational use impacts; $800,000 for seabird impacts; $500,000 for rocky and sandy shoreline habitat impacts; $425,000 for fishery and water quality impacts; and $400,000 for wetland habitat impacts. Also, $470,000 was budgeted for restoration planning and oversight. STATUS OF RESTORATION: Restoration projects completed.
