A steelhead hatchery along the Mad River in Humboldt County; this area offers rivers, redwoods, mountains and beaches for innumerable outdoor activities. The Mad River is an outstanding steelhead fishery while the Pacific Ocean, about 20 minutes west, beckons ceaselessly.

Directions: Highway 299 to the Blue Lake Exit (5.3 miles east of Highway 101), go straight on Blue Lake Blvd. Continue straight through roundabout. Take next right onto Greenwood Road, approximately 0.4 miles. Turn left on Railroad to arrive at 1660 Hatchery Road, Arcata, CA 95521. MAP(opens in new tab)

Self-guided tours are always available. Large group tour may be arranged by emailing madriver@wildlife.ca.gov at least two weeks ahead of time.

Hatchery property offers access to fishing, picnicking and river viewing. Restrooms are available.
