Data collection and analysis are integral to managing recreationally important marine fish populations. Fishery-dependent data are essential for developing accurate fishery assessments, and for evaluating the effectiveness of state and federal fishery management policies. Recreational Fishing Data Project staff participates in gathering, reviewing, and analyzing recreational fishery data used to satisfy federal regulatory requirements. To meet these, staff supports the California Recreational Fisheries Survey and other recreational fishery information surveys to ensure their management relevance and scientific quality.
Project staff also participates in developing recreational fisheries data surveys and methods on an interstate level through participation in the tri-state Recreational Fisheries Information Network, California Ocean Protection Council, and National Marine Fisheries Service's Marine Recreational Information Program. Project staff works collaboratively to coordinate state and federal recreational fishery data collection programs, and review information needs for the management and conservation of marine recreational fisheries.
