California Commercial Pacific Sardine Landing Receipt Data

California processors of commercial Pacific sardine landings submit receipts twice a month to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) as required by Fish and Game Code Section 8046. Receipts contain catch location (by CDFW blocks) and catch information (in pounds landed) for each landing. Catch data (in metric tons) have been mapped by CDFW block and fishing season from 2000 to 2014/15. A table of California commercial landings and harvest guidelines (in metric tons) for the West Coast of the United States, and California ex-vessel value corresponding to each season is included here.

Note: No confidential commercial Pacific sardine landings data is included here. Vessel activity was not disclosed where less than three vessels set per block, per year. Some years may appear to contain no data to protect the confidentiality of vessel location information.

* In 2000, the Northern Anchovy Fishery Management Plan (FMP) was amended (Amendment 8) to change the name of the Northern Anchovy FMP to the Coastal Pelagic Species FMP, to include other coastal pelagic species in the FMP (including Pacific sardine), and to set harvest specifications for the Pacific sardine fishery for the West Coast of the United States (i.e., California, Oregon and Washington). In 2014, the 12 month Pacific sardine fishing season changed from being based on a calendar year (January 1 – December 31) management cycle to a fishing season (July 1 – June 30) cycle to better align the timing of the research and science required for annual stock assessments with the management schedule. A one-time interim harvest period from January 1, 2014 through June 30, 2014 was established to allow targeted fishing to continue during the transition to the new management cycle.
