Opened in 1888, Mt. Shasta is the oldest trout hatchery west of the Mississippi. Located in Siskiyou County in Northern California. Mt. Shasta Hatchery supplies the majority of eggs for CDFW trout hatcheries, upwards of 30 million eggs a year.

Directions: From Interstate 5: exit at the central Mount Shasta off-ramp.Head west on Lake Street, which turns into Hatchery Lane. At the intersection of Hatchery Lane and Old Stage Road, continue straight ahead, across old stage road, into the hatchery parking lot. MAP(opens in new tab)

Self-guided tours
Visit Hatchery Building B from mid-march through July to observe eggs hatching and fry being raised. See the transitions from the hatchery building to the nursery ponds, where the fry are grown until they are ready to move to the raceways. Check out the brood stock, where fish can grow to nearly 10 lbs.
Hike
Take a walk on the Elsa Rupp Trail to the nature area, graciously donated to the Department of Fish and Game in 1973.
Museum
Visit the Mount Shasta Sisson Museum(opens in new tab) to learn the history of the hatchery and surrounding area.
